Zack Wright – January MVP

Spartak (Russia) guard Zack Wright has been awarded the VTB United League January MVP award.

The MVP of the month award is determined by the League and the Sport-Express newspaper through a special formula, which takes into consideration players’ stats (specifically, their efficiency rating), as well as a vote by experts.

Zack Wright garnered 10 points in the January MVP rankings to beat out the competition: Krasnye Krylia guard Aaron Miles (5 points), Triumph center Kyle Landry (4 points), Khimki forward Paul Davis and Lokomotiv-Kuban center Aleks Maric (each with 3 points).

Zack Wright played three games for Spartak in the VTB United League in the January and his team enjoyed victory in each: on the road over Lithuanian Lietuvos Rytas and at home over Russian UNICS and Estonian Kalev. The American guard showed himself to be a true leader in those games, averaging 17.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.3 assists and a 28-point efficiency rating. Zack had, perhaps, his best game of the month in Week 10 against Lietuvos Rytas. In 35 minutes he scored 23 points, made 9 of 12 field goals, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists.

Joining Zack Wright in January’s symbolic starting five, as determined by VTB United League and Sport-Express experts, are forward Viktor Khryapa (CSKA), guard Aaron Miles (Krasnye Krylia), forward Branco Cvetcovic (Astana) and center Bamba Fall (Kalev).

- I’m very happy for myself and for my team given we made a big step forward in all of our competitions, - said Zack Wright in response to congratulations for individual honor in the VTB United League. - I think this is the first time I’ve been MVP. In the fall I was the top assist man in EuroBasket qualifying (Wright just received Bosnian citizenship and played for their national team, dishing out 7.4 assists per game and guaranteeing the Bosnians a trip to the European championships – ed.). I take these types of awards as a challenge: If you’ve been called the best, then you need to work more!
