VTB United League and Euroleague executives meet in Barcelona

VTB United League and Euroleague executives held a business meeting in Barcelona. VTB United League General Director Andrey Shirokov and VTB United League Euroleague Representative Jiri Zidek met with Euroleague President Jordi Bertomeu and Chief Operations Officer Eduard Scott to discuss questions relating to cooperation between the leagues and their development.

- I think that today’s meeting was another step in building constructive working relations between the two leagues, - said Official VTB United League Euroleague Representative Jiri Zidek. – The Euroleague knows what is happening with the VTB United League – concerning both our shared plans and ideas for future development. We, for our part, are absolutely confident that both sides win from mutual cooperation.

The primary question at the meeting in Barcelona concerned the possibility of granting the VTB United League a Euroleague wild card entry (at this time, the League receives a bid to Euroleague qualifying – ed. note). The teams playing in the VTB United League play a bigger and bigger role in European basketball and such a step would be completely justified. I’m confident that the prestige of the VTB United League will only continue to grow and the opportunity to receive a wild card with direct entry into the Euroleague competition will be an excellent motivator for participating teams.

- Thanks to Jiri Zidek’s work over the past six months we’ve established good working relations with the Euroleague, - noted VTB United League General Director Andrey Shirokov. – Practically every week we’re in contact with them, discussing all important questions of development, both concerning European basketball as a whole and everything related to the VTB United League. I’m confident that it is essential and will be very beneficial to our League.
